I think it is great that for-profit hospice is becoming more and more popular. This topic goes hand in hand with our discussion of palliative care in last week's class. Not only does hospice and palliative care help the patient, but also the family. We learned in our gerontological nursing class that hospice can actually make a patient live longer for several months by improving their mood, pain level, and outlook on death. As for the family, they can be comforted that measures will be taken to put their loved one at ease once the time comes. I think human beings in general are afraid of death but I think one reason they are so afraid is because they believe it will be able. With the progress of hospice and palliative care, we can be assured that we will not have to suffer unnecessarily when it comes time for our death. Now rather than focusing on the dread that death can bring, people can start worrying more about living life while they're on this earth.
