Ancients (Plato & Aristotle)

Who doesn't LOVE philosophy?  Woo-hoo!  You are the luckiest students to get to study the ancient philosophers!

What videos can you find related to either Plato or Aristotle?  Please post here.

Also, you can respond with questions about what you don't understand in the readings and/or what you most like or most dislike.

Socrates: He believed in the cultivation of the soul meaning what is the essence of the person and to reflect on things and to seek out questions. We should forget about the material things of this world and focus on the "self". We should not trust everyone based on what they said. We are to question it. He wants us to live a good life and only Philosophy can give us that answer.

Plato: Unreliability of the senses was one of his focuses. Socrates was an influence of Plato. He sought to also make sense of what he saw. He turned away from early philosophy and sought to correct them. He said the people were to ready to accept things at face values. One cant say actions are not good and bad till the good are defined. Laws cant be labeled as just or unjust till you define what is justice. Through this he formulated a theory of forms and ideas. He believed in mans immortal soul. Plato believed that at birth the soul forgets the knowledge absolute the good and the beautiful and knowledge helps them remember. He believed that the good is absolute.

Aristotle: He has respect for empirical reality. We can find out all about a person or objects by his theory of Predicts or categories according to Aristotle. General concepts come in 10 distinct kinds. Being is complex and not a single kind of a thing. Human kind grew in wisdom and knowledge. He was interested in ethics and politics and that all men are good and aim for it. Happiness is an activity, not a state of disposition.

These are a few ideas that I pulled from the video. I hope it is helpful for everyone.

  2. I know this is a week late, but for those of you who are scrolling through as I am and visiting the different posts, here is a video that I think will help you understand Plato and Aristotle a little better. It compares the two and goes a little more in depth than we did in class, but it is helpful to understand the basics of their philosophies.

    3. I really enjoyed this video as well! I'm not what you would call a "deep thinker", so the concepts in philosophy are kinda difficult for me to grasp, but this video helped me make distinctions between the different concepts.

  3. I like Aristotles view on the ultimate goal of human life because it really puts into perspective why we do the things we do as humans. Even if we are doing things for other people, Aristotle would claim that we do it in part because of our desire to die happy.

  4. I agree with Maggie in this aspect of people wanting to die happy. I believe that people are all looking to do things that make them happy. I think it would be safe to say that we would want to live our lives happily as much as we can. I do not know of many people that do not want to be happy while they are alive. People may be unhappy at times but it is not something that someone really strives for.
