  1. The death of this firefighter is a tragic loss to the community. It's not often that a man who has made such a profound impact on his community loses his life in such a terrible accident. The outpouring of support from surrounding areas, specifically for the Cincinnati Fire Department has been tremendous. The fact that the Columbus Fire Department is going to be staffing Cincinnati Fire Stations during the funeral is a testament to the bond and brotherhood that these men share.

  2. This loss is a huge hit for the area around Cincinnati because of how the tragedy can be felt because of how many people willingly give their lives on a day to day basis. There is a definite sense of family with regards to the support that fellow Fire Departments have given to the area and the families that were effected. Show how close these members are because of their occupation.

  3. Although the loss of this man is extremely tragic, I think that it is wonderful how people from all over are coming together in order to honor his life. At times it feels as if there aren't that many good people left in the world. However, by witnessing this large gathering of people, many of which did not even know this man, taking the time to come to his memorial is definitely nice to see. This tragedy can also be used as a reminder that life is precious and that we should enjoy each day we have.

    1. I fully agree with you Mel. I think it shows how much good humans have to all gather as one, big community to show the appreciation of this man. When tragedies like this happen, many question why would this happen to such a good man? It really does make people realize how short life can be, and how it can be taken from us at any moment.

  4. I think the death of this heroic figure relates to our suicide conversation from class two weeks ago. Dr. Cate had mentioned, "If a firefighter walks into a burning building, knowing that he probably will die, is he suicidal?" This man died while risking his life to save others in a fire. This makes me appreciate firefighters so much because to them death is a very much a reality. They must realize that each time they drive to a scene where there is a fire, that this situation could potentially take their lives. However, I personally do not believe that these men are suicidal. After reflecting on our discussion in class, I do believe that the intentionality must be there for a death to be considered a suicide. These men are very brave and their acts are selfless. It is so very tragic for this man to have died young and in this way, but it should be a comfort to his family that he died with such honor and that so many people hold him in the highest regard.

  5. It was so amazing to see the community come together because of this man's death. Even though it was such a tragic situation, it really shows how much people care about each other. My hope is that situations like this can show people that they can act compassionately each day, instead of just when there is a loss of a loved one. I watched the news the night he died and the comments given by some of his neighbors were so touching. They shared stories about how he was always there to help and how he was a patriarchal figure in the community. I also watched the news the day of his funeral and one Cincinnati firefighter said that firefighters from towns outside of Cincinnati covered each fire station so that every Cincinnati firefighter was able to attend his funeral. It is just so awesome to see how much people will do for each other in a time of need and tragedy.

    1. I agree with you Katie. It was very thoughtful of the other fire fighters to come and take the place of our own during the funeral. It just goes to show that when we are in need people step in and take care of one another. I do wonder what he must of been thinking in his last moments he was alive. I would be scared.

  6. As a firefighter's daughter, it is very scary every time I hear his alarm go off. It always makes me nervous that not just him but man of the men and women that have become like family to me risk their lives every day. My dad's fire chief passed away about 2 years ago and it hurt many people, not just his family and the fire family. The entire community came together to honor Jack and his great dedication. It was unbelievable how the entire city of Cincinnati was able to come together to honor FAO Gordon and his life as a firefighter. It makes me very grateful to have such a strong community willing to honor this man and others that do die in the line of duty. Every firefighter knows that there is always a chance that something could happen. It's much more of a reality to them than it is to those who do not face these risks every day. They always receive much respect from my family and me because it's what they deserve. When tragedy struck, this city was able to come together and help anyone in need which is amazing to me.

  7. This tragic event that claimed the life of a brave man shows us many things. First and foremost it shows how selfless some public service men and women are. We tried to come up with a definition of suicide in class but we didn’t get too far, and situations like this came up. Some said it was suicide others said it wasn’t. For me I would say that is was suicide but not the negative form of suicide that automatically comes from the word. I would say this act of selflessness is the most honorable thing a person can do with their life. In my opinion it fits the definition of suicide but it does not take away any honor that this man deserves in my eyes. I know using the word “suicide” may make people think otherwise.

  8. I think everyone would agree how tragic this loss was for the community. To have such a brave man lose his life in an accident like this is heartbreaking. I can not say enough how thankful I am that we have hero's working to save our lives every single day. It makes me sleep better at night knowing that we have people like him fighting for us. We discussed this and suicide had been brought up. I do not think this was an intentional suicide. This man lost his life to save someone else. That is something that not many people would do. When I think about suicide I think about someone who is very sick and very selfish. This man did nothing selfish at all he did the complete opposite.

  9. This event was extremely tragic for our community. For someone to lose their life like he did, so brave and so incredibly heartbreaking. My dad's cousin recently passed away and he was a firefighter in Ft. Thomas. The funeral was very hard to sit through while being surrounded by all of firefighters from Ft. Thomas and Covington, so I cannot imagine how incredible Daryl's funeral must have been with all those men there for him. As discussed in class, I do not believe that this was intentional suicide. This man's intention was to go into a burning building to save another person. He did this as a selfless act, while suicide is a selfish act.

  10. The death of this honorable firefighter has stopped the entire community. I believe that people who risk their life every day to give the community security of their surroundings. The entire community came together to remember him for his bravery. This reminds me of the attacks of 9/11 when the nation came together support through this attacks on the nation. When a group of people can come together and leave all differences behind, that shows humanity.

  11. I think it is amazing how big of an impact one person can have on a community. I believe we all should strive to make a difference for the lives of others, because that is exactly what he did. He died with bravery, honor, and extraordinary character. I can relate to this story, because my dad is a firefighter and he himself has lost a few friends over the years while fighting fires. I think that all firefighters are heroes, because they risk their lives everyday for the betterment of all.
